True strokes

One of the major reasons that I work in notebooks the way I do is that the process of using ink & pen in a bound volume minimizes the opportunities to scroll around & contemplate larger structures. From my perspective, the most important moment in a prose poem is that which occurs between the period of one sentence & the capital letter that initiates the next. No two blank spaces are alike & there are moments when I think of the sentences primarily as a way of setting those spaces up & as if it were the spaces that were the true strokes of the painting. I can, when I am really in the zone, when I’m writing & sometimes when I’m in a reading as well, literally hear those spaces just as I do the softer ones between words, let alone the half-hidden ones you can find within words if you just listen closely. Silence is so much a part of noise yet we so seldom give it heed. »

Blowing It In Biblical Proportions: Part II
WTF? Four more errors! That's 8 total. At this rate, the Red Sox will smash the 1909 Detroit record of 19 team errors in game 5. With a 2-0 lead over the Cards, the Sox head to St. Louis for a possible 3 games. I'm looking at Pujols-Rolen-Edmonds to do a lot better than 4 for 23 with 1 RBI at home. Better defense is what the Sox will need if they want to win one in St. Louis. »

Fertile spaces

A written pointillism? In Josef Albers' book on color theory he mentions how the recognition that the eye, at a distance, will meld yellow & blue into green freed painters from only mixing the colors to create the desired effect. You can't of course read Sunset Debris or Three Poems from a distance but I think memory can stand in for distance here and that can be used to effect. »

Go Bostons!

Sanattomasta shokista selvittyään Silliman sai sanotuksi:

It is often the case that the baseball playoffs are more exciting to watch than the World Series to which they lead. And it may turn out to be the case again this year. But anyone who is a fan of baseball will have to admit that the past week has been one of those transcendent moments when what is humanly possible in sport is on display so clearly that even the most casual observer would take notice. Since we’re rooting for everyone & everything from Massachusetts for the next several weeks anyway, we’re quite pleased. »

Tämän päivän New York Timesissa lehden pääkirjallisuusarvostelija Michiko Kakutani kirjoittaa:

The team hailed as the team of the century is now mocked for pulling the biggest choke job in the annals of sports. The ghost of Babe Ruth was dead. The tide of history had turned. Karma had left the Bronx and fled north up the Eastern corridor.

Certainly anyone who was not a die-hard Yankees fan would say there was a kind of poetic justice to it all: an end to the dominion of the Evil Empire, a stake in the heart of the richest, most storied franchise in sports history. After 26 championships, after years of George Steinbrenner's outspending everyone, after decades of Yankees fans' taunting Boston with chants of "1918," wasn't it finally someone else's turn? And who better to do it than the Red Sox — national symbols, along with the hapless Chicago Cubs, of the perennial underdog?

And there were other morals to be drawn from the narrative... »

Peukut pystyyn Punasukille

Käyn läpi tuttuja osoitteita, oheisen blogiluettelon mukaisessa järjestyksessä. Steven Johnson aloittaa päivän postillan otsikolla True Confessions:

For reasons that are too boring to explain here, I am a lifelong Yankees fan. But sitting last night watching the Yankees/Red Sox game, I began to detect an unfamiliar sentiment swelling inside me.

First, I've long argued (after the Yanks won their first three Series in the 90s) that the only honorable thing to root for as a Yankee fan was as many interesting playoff games as possible. So if the Yanks won the first three games, you had to root for the opposing team to make it close.

Second, I do think it would be a more interesting Series if the Sox had a chance to reverse the curse.

Third, my wife has planted in my head the idea that if the Sox win, Kerry will get a subtle, but perhaps crucial, boost in the closing days of the election: the baseball version of an October surprise.

Ergo, I think I'm a Red Sox fan.
Seuraavana vuorossa Alex Ross:

Is it possible that Boston is going to win everything? And I don't mean just the World Series. I'll be going up on Friday for James Levine's grand debut as the Boston Symphony's music director. Mahler's Eighth: "The indescribable here is done..."

Mark Young, Australiasta, kirjoittaa:

Bardo Thodol

All these negative capabilities

Here goes.

Work in Progress on runoteoksen synnyn dokumentaationa historiallinen tapaus, julkinen ateljee, niin kuin G. Stein olisi avannut ovensa ja julistanut tervetulleiksi kaikki joilla on vähänkään herkkyyttä taiteen hauraimmille säikeille, niille joista runomme on tehty.

Runokoulu, eli prosessi, on ollut käynnissä 6. syyskuuta lähtien. Aivan ensimmäiseksi, preludissa, aita härkä kaksi kalaa siis runoilija, joka tunnustaa nimeä Metukim Chalomot, sanoo:

Tämän blogin tarkoituksena on kuvata runokirjan synty, alusta
loppuun. Toisin sanoen blogi toimii eräänlaisena työkirjana,
johon kirjaan kaiken sen materiaalin, jonka ennen olen kirjoittanut
'työkirjoiksi' nimeämiini vihkoihin. Runoudestani on sanottu

Godspeed!

Provocation vs. consumption

Art is no longer interested in providing an image of natural beauty, nor does it aim to procure the pleasure ensuing from the contemplation of harmonious forms. On the contrary, its aim is to teach us to interpret the world through different eyes, to enjoy a return to archaic or esoteric models, the universe of dreams or the fantasies of the mentally ill, the visions provoked by drugs, the rediscovery of material, the startling representation of everyday objects in improbable contexts (ready-mades, Dada, etc), and subconscious drives. »

While Kerouac was a famous nocturnal socializer, knocking around the jazzy New York streets with the likes of Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs (and even, believe it or not, attending the Ballet Russe with a group that included Gore Vidal) it often appears that he had no one to talk to except for the voices between his own two ears. »

Songs from a database

I'm trying to develop a software that will become a repository for the kind of lyrical ideas you like. You might include in it all your previous lyrics and other people's lyrics that you somehow respond to. Then, when you come to writing a new song, what you enter into the machine is the phonetic and rhythmic structure. And it starts looking through your database for matches. »

At the core of media poetry...

...is the relationship of language in writing, pictures, and sounds to the technological media (books, typewriters, photography, film, electronic sound, letters, fax, radio, television, video, holography, computers): concrete and visual poetry, sound poetry, e-mail art, radio art, video- and holopoetry are corresponding genres related to digital poetry. Media poetry has long since prepared itself for mediating between divergent worlds: between individual media cultures, between art forms, between art and science. And it has long since left behind, or deconstructed, poetry's one-sided fixation on the book culture, even if these developments are only peripherally dealt with by literary studies, which usually continues to maintain the book as the primary medium. »

In awe of beauty

Jukka-Pekka Kervinen: textual conjectures, wednesday, september 29, 2004

Mark Young kirjoittaa blogissaan Jukka-Pekka Kervisestä ja hänen työstään:
Now it's Jukka the calligrapher at both Nonlinear Poetry & textual conjectures.

The sites overlap more than they ever have; but if I were genotyping I would describe them as having the same father but different mothers - though close, like sisters - because, to me at least, the images on each site devolve from what has preceeded them on that particular site.

It is interesting to see the progression in his work. He experiments, masters each new technique that he has developed, moves on from it but brings it & its precedents along & uses them when he feels they would augment so that, at times, there is the synergy of several styles in a new piece. The constants are an incredible ability to use space (for unlike a linear creator, these pieces are worked within a fairly defined area), an excitement, a sense of discovery, of mysteries of which we see only a portion but can find for ourselves now that we have been shown an entrance.

Every time I visit his blogs it is with anticipation. I am never disappointed. Jukka fills me with awe. I truly believe we are watching genius at work.

Olen joka kohdassa samaa mieltä. Lisää Kervisen töistä Tuli&Savun sivuilla.
