Opening lines of famous novels in the form of hay(na)ku I

Alussa
olivat suo,
kuokka — ja Jussi.

This is the most famous opening line in all of Finnish literature, a trilogy written by Väinö Linna, called Täällä Pohjantähden alla (Under the North Star ). I'm not giving the English translation here because then I'd have have to write a few thousand pages of Finnish history and modern mythology, and Mr Linna has already done it for us. Suffice it to say, they are, quite literally, the opening words of a Finnish Genesis — in the form of a hay(na)ku.
